"The only important thing in a book is the meaning that it has for you." - W. Somerset Maugham Representation in literature is imperative in connecting students from the pages they turn to the lives they lead on a daily basis. Literacy is a special class that allows students to cozy up with a novel and lose themselves in the real or imaginative world of authors on a global scale. My purpose, as a middle school Literacy teacher, is to introduce and immerse my students in books that will help develop their lifelong love of reading. My students are at a turning point in their lives where they are becoming young adults, and shaping their thoughts and actions into who they will ultimately become in the world. Through a diverse classroom library, filled with high-interest, middle-level engaging texts, my students can explore and seek guidance through the ways in which their pasts might shape their future. They will also have access to look through the lens of their peers, and find a greater understanding of how life experiences are uniquely shaped for each individual.
