Our percussion class is required enrichment coursework for grades K, 1 & 2. In this class, we explore basics of rhythm through listening, songs, and instruments-- especially the Arabic darbuka drum. There is also an integrated dance component to this course wherein students participate in a modern dance circle. Our school is an IB PYP Candidate school. The IB model offers us a framework through which we construct knowledge that transcends the content of a daily lesson. For example, through our percussion class, students learn fundamental techniques of instrument playing, but students also examine the ways in which we express ourselves. Students ask questions like-- what is this form? what is it like? why is it that way? can I take ownership of this and modify it to create something original? So, our class is rare and special in that it engages a music and performance inquiry with students in primary years.
