Read, Read, Read, Getting students to read is a difficult task these days. Students are used to instant gratification on their computers and iphones, therefore making reading "boring." Assigning books for students to read is just not getting the job done. Instead, I have chosen to run book clubs in the classroom. I provided students with their reading levels, grouped them accordingly and let them pick a book that suits their needs and peaks their interests, In doing so, students picked books that are popular today and unfortunately not available in the library that houses books from yesterday! Book clubs are an excellent way for students to learn how to collaborate, use scholarly language, build ideas off their peers, learn from each other and be held accountable for their reading. I am excited to start the process of book clubs in the classroom, now all I need are the books!
