Our school serves students from many different backgrounds. Some experience homelessness, poverty, food insecurity, and other life circumstances in which they cannot get some of their most basic needs met. The Covid Pandemic has unfortunately increased the number of students needing extra support, and we quickly discovered that we did not have the resources or necessary items readily available. “Maslow before Bloom” is derived from Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning Objectives. The phrase suggests that before students are mentally equipped to do the heavy lifting that comes with learning, their Maslow needs must first be met. By starting a care closet, I hope that we can meet some of our students’ most basic needs, ease some of the burdens our families face, and in return, allow our students to focus on academics. My students are incredibly deserving, and we thank you for choosing us!
