Studies show that it is extremely important to read aloud to children. This practice does not just apply to young child but to young adults as well. Reading aloud is a great time to model reading fluency and to build reading comprehension skills. Children must learn how to ask questions, make predictions, and identify with the characters in a story. In my classroom, we participate in literacy centers four days a week because I know that reading is the foundation of all subjects. During literacy centers, the students rotate through different centers made up of a teacher-directed center, word work center, writing center, listening center, and a computer center. They really enjoy center time and it is a great way to build reading skills. Currently, I only have four books on CD so this center is frequently overlooked. I am requesting a variety of books on CD to use in a listening center. Listening to books on CD is a great way to build reading fluency and comprehension. I would love to have enough books on CD to maintain a steady listening center for my students. They really love to listen to all the different voices and sound effects provided by a book on CD. I usually have the students complete a graphic organizer analyzing and reviewing the book once the CD finishes. This is a great way to promote writing skills as well. I feel that these resources will not only be used for educational purposes but also as a way to inspire children to read more on their own.
