This year students are taking charge of their own learning! We will be doing researchers workshop for science and social studies. Researchers workshop gives students the chance to build on social skills that are necessary to succeed, such as working together, becoming better communicators, and problem solving. This workshop is all about students asking questions and then researching to find out their answers. When students are the ones asking the questions they have a purpose to learn. We will use TIME for Kids magazine to research different science and social studies topics. This magazine will also give them the opportunity to see nonfiction text and nonfiction text features in a magazine rather than a book. Another important part of any type of learning is being comfortable while you work. Our classroom is very open with no desks and a couple of tables. Flexible seating allows students to choose how they work the best. I can picture students deep in their research, spread throughout the room, some on the floor and a few at tables. A couch would be an added bonus to work at! Students would love to use that area to learn!
