As a Reading Specialist, I primarily work with Dyslexic students. The main focus of instruction is phonemic awareness and phonics. This is a picture of some of my students during their phonics instruction for the day. After their daily lesson I then work on fluency and comprehension. The activity cards and games that I had for this purpose were destroyed during the flooding of our school because of Hurricane Harvey. Because these students are Dyslexic, they lack self confidence when it comes to reading. The activity cards that I had, built confidence because I started with easy and interesting topics to read. We just finished a week studying unusual fruits and then we tasted them to see whether we liked them or not. Making reading fun encourages these children to read more and once that starts to happen they become more fluent and more successful in everything they do!
