Beginning readers are excited about visiting the library, but are often overwhelmed by the amount of choices offered. These baskets, with easy to read picture labels attached by cable ties, will allow my students the opportunity to independently find age/ability appropriate materials to read. It will also allow books to be grouped by interest, author, or series for quick and easy access. This is especially critical for my kindergarten and 1st graders who don't have the library skills necessary to find the materials on their own. About 90% of the books checked out this year by primary students are from the baskets we currently have in our library. Therefore, I would like to complete the project to make our library more accessible, a project that was started with teacher out-of-pocket money. Access to a library which is user friendly and age appropriate will allow students to experience success and encourage return visits, and of course, more reading!
