A book is a dream that you hold in your hand. It appears the illiteracy numbers will go up due to Covid. Teachers can help bridge that gap by building a solid foundation in phonemic awareness, teaching phonics, and reading quality books for comprehension practice. However, students also need practice in reading sight words and sounding out unknown words. I’m requesting simple readers that have predictable patterned text with lots of sight word practice. I have a few of these types of books, but not enough for students to get some great practice in reading simple to complex text. In Kindergarten, children have the daunting task of learning to read. The transition from phonemic awareness to phonics instruction to reading sight words is a quick process. A classroom needs confidence building sight word and emergent readers for student practice. This is a need many classrooms have but no money to purchase. By submitting this request for approval, these books will significantly impact student confidence and reading ability during this very early learning process. The ability to read sight words quickly and confidently will create a foundation that will have a significant impact on future reading success. During Covid, parents were the teachers for distance learning. For some, this was a giant burden and for others, they ran with it. We as teachers of young learners had to reinvent the wheel and trust that parents could help their children learn how to read. We are currently working on filling the gaps that occurred during these past couple of years. We as teachers have the significant burden of playing catch-up. We can do it with resources that will impact student achievement - like sight word and emergent readers.
