I have a group of students from different backgrounds and cultures. Reading is not their favorite part of my English classroom, and with an emphasis on literacy in our school district this year, we are attempting to "amp up" our reading libraries in our classrooms. I want my students to have a variety of books at their finger tips. If they are able to connect with a character, they are more likely to read on their own. They have been mandated to read book selections by their teachers while they have been in school, and I think it would be nice to let them have a selection of what they would like to read. If they are able to choose their own book, they can enter a world on their own, at their own free will. I want to add more books to my classroom library, so my students will have a wide variety of books at their fingertips. This will give them a chance to read something interesting, that is of their choosing. It's not an assignment for them, it's a way to open their mind while they open the pages of a new novel.
