Sonic Pi is an application/program designed by live coder/developer Sam Aaron, originally for a Raspberry Pi computer. It is open source software developed with the objective of using code language to write music. Sonic Pi is a creative way for students to engage in electronic music composition through a fun and new method. Sonic Pi also introduces students to music technology, an upcoming and economically growing field, at an earlier level than a degree. Sonic Pi was specifically designed for and built in collaboration with teachers for use in the classroom via the tiny computer Raspberry Pi. Students will look forward to coming to music and school because they are learning new ways to persevere and problem solve through coding! By purchasing Raspberry Pi Kits for my classroom, I would be able to add a new instrument member to my current instrument families - digitally! Students will be challenged and want to keep coming back for more! It's a great creative outlet and it'll allow them to think on their feet by making last-minute decisions in front of an audience because it's live.
