My students go to school in and urban school district in CA. They are a diverse group of students with many interests, abilities, and personalities. My class this year is unique because they care a lot about each other; they celebrate each others' strengths and are accepting of others' weaknesses. I have many students who are low income and come from homes where the primary language is not english. This year many of my students have had special learning needs. Here are some examples the types of needs that I addressed in my classroom this year: I had 4 student study team meetings this year to address low academic performance. 4 students had individualized behavior contracts. 2 students were diagnosed with ADHD. 4 students has individualized education plans. 2 students spoke no English at the beginning of the year. 55% of the class are English Learners. I have had a lot of success with my students this year given the students' backgrounds but many are still struggling readers.
