Research has shown that using a language is better facilitated when students must use it for communicative purposes, when students are highly motivated to do so, and when anxiety levels regarding performance are low. We will use the breakout boxes to provide both the need and the motivation to communicate in a low-anxiety setting, as students use the second language to progress in their resolution of the puzzle. Students will work in small groups to solve the puzzle of the box for that day. I will be able to use scenarios or puzzles already created (or ones that I create myself) to highlight different sets of vocabulary or topics in a fun and captivating way. As we get to know the breakout process better, I hope to be able to engage my higher level students in developing breakout puzzles and accompanying instructions for the lower level students to use, or even to post for students in other schools to use, thus allowing the higher students to not only use their French, but to do so in a meaningful, real-life project!
