My students are engaged speakers and fabulous talkers, and they crave literature that will touch their hearts and open their minds to diverse experiences. With access to the young adult novel Akata Witch, students will get to dive into a magically realistic world focused on "a quartet of magic students, studying the visible and invisible, learning to change reality," according to the book jacket. Described as "the Nigerian Harry Potter," Akata Witch gives students the chance to read about a girl and her friends gaining powerful skills that help them defeat the forces of evil in their world. With all the political turmoil of the present day, students need and deserve texts that show them how change is possible. Akata Witch does that and more in a fun, relatable, and very readable way.
