Our magnet school is a MicroSociety school, where students create their own business plans and operate their own business ventures. Each year, students create educational endeavors for their peers to explore. For the last several years, my second grade students have chosen math games. The students have been brainstorming ideas and searching for engaging activities that will attract their peers to their venture, and keep them coming back for more. These games will engage the students in content-based activities that are both social and fun to help build important math skills that will help carry them throughout grade levels. Students will be able to play Quizmo board games with their peers, engage in a Jenga-like math tower while practicing fact fluency with Addition and Subtraction Tower, participate in exciting games of 4 Way Count Down. With games like ZAP! and Light N Strike, students will experience a new fun and engaging opportunity to work on their math skills in a social and competitive experience. Additionally, these games will be available to students outside of Micro time, and can be used during math centers as well as indoor recess and free time to help foster a love of math.
