My project will begin with the implementation of the Writing Without Tears Program for beginning writers. This program takes students through the elementary stages of handwriting, using specially designed chalk slates, chalk bits, writing templates, double lined paper, special pencils, and grips for tiny hands and those with poor muscle tone, and other tools for practicing handwriting, from drawing basic lines to writing both upper and lower-case letters of the alphabet, as well as numbers. It is a systematic program designed for beginning hand-writers and extends into the upper grades with additional resources for cursive writers. My focus, however, will be on instructing, modeling, and guiding these younger students to a point where they are actually able to write, constructing words and simple sentences to express their thoughts, feelings, and opinions with the written word. It is imperative that these students learn to write both letters, words, and numbers, before they can progress through the academic curriculum that lies ahead of them. Without a strong foundation to build on, they will continue to struggle and fall further behind. Handwriting is a skill that is an essential for all students to master. It is my desire to help those who need the extra support in handwriting through the use of this program and the supplies that accompany it.
