I teach 6th grade math and have over 100 students! Math can often be a difficult subject for students to learn and I want to make the curriculum comprehensible by providing hands-on learning materials. I also want to encourage critical thinking and creativity by providing hands-on materials that are STEM based. For example, instead of students using just a formula to calculate the surface area of a rectangular prism, I would like them to have a net of the rectangular prism to manipulate and use to understand why the formula makes sense. My approach is to facilitate a framework for students to create meaningful connections between concrete, representational, and abstract levels of thinking and understanding in math. Students’ learning starts out with visual, tangible, and kinesthetic experiences to establish basic understanding, and then students are able to extend their knowledge and move on to an abstract level of thinking using mathematical symbols. I plan to use these materials to give my students those visual and tangible experiences they need to understand the 6th grade math standards. In addition, my students learn better when they are comfortable and free to move about the classroom. I am requesting a few new comfortable chairs and some under the desk exercise bicycles to keep them moving and comfortable for an optimal learning experience! Thank you for considering!
