This year in my 5th grade class my students will learn so many different concepts during reading, things such as: story structure, summarizing, theme, questioning, comparing and contrasting, inferring and predicting, sequence of events, monitoring or clarifying, visualizing, cause and effect, fact and opinion, conclusions and generalizations, analyzing and evaluating, authors purpose, understanding characters, main idea and details, and text and graphic features. It's one thing to teach them these concepts and practice with short stories but it's another thing to actually apply this learning to full books. These books will give my students the chance to apply their learning and really take a hands-on role in their education. They will have the opportunity to choose which book group that they want to be in and they will be able to work together and have discussions about what they've read and what they have learned during this book. I know that it will be a memorable experience, something that will help them progress and help their reading ability to grow over the year.
