In order to help my school's 6th grade literacy rate, I have worked hard this year to incorporate as many Language Arts strategies in my class as possible. In order to further my efforts, I would LOVE to have a class reading assignment where students annotate a fictional text while also holding it up to a scientific light. Several of the themes in this book are discussed in our annual curriculum. This includes soil formation and conservation, planetary science, and several aspects of chemistry. This would be a fantastic way for students to picture themselves in a similar situation as Mark Watney and see if their knowledge could "pass the test".
