The flexible and alternative seating options I have requested will increase student motivation in the classroom, foster critical thinking skills, and increase their success in English Language Arts. Seating options include mobile desks, plastic lounge chairs, swivel chairs, a bean bag chair, and portable lap desks. Research has shown that alternative seating in the classroom increases student motivation to collaborate and read. Think about when you were a child and doing homework at home. Did you always sit at a table or were you laying on a bed or sitting in your favorite chair? Many of my students do not have safe, quiet places to do their school work at home or to simply read. The flexible seating in the classroom will increase independent reading among all students.
