This Donors Choose Project was inspired by the #armmewith movement. After posting about my classroom needs, it was suggested that I create a project to add to my classroom library. I believe that literature has an extraordinary ability to help people understand empathy. What better way to put yourself in someone else's shoes than by living their lives through the pages of a book? In my classroom, we spend a lot of time talking about the tough topics that permeate our society. Unfortunately, I do not have a large supply of books that reflect these topics. Most of the books in my room have a white boy as the main protagonist. I would love to add to my library with a diverse selection of literature to help my students to be more excited when searching for something new to read. My hope is that through reading, my students will learn about the lives of others, and be willing to have hard conversations about these things. Through all of this, the ultimate end goal is a more understanding and welcoming society, and a classroom where my students feel free to be exactly who they are.
