Let's be honest, in a world of Google, looking up words in a dictionary may seem like a thing of the past. However, when students are in class, Googling a word is not an option. Even if they could use their phones in school (and during standardized testing) not all of my students even have phone with Googling capability. Handing a giant book with tons of words to a student on the day of their state test does not help them to succeed. It is essential that students are able to use a dictionary long before they get to their standardized tests. If they have learned how to use it they can feel confident in their ability to understand the questions that are being asked. As an added bonus dictionaries also help increase vocabulary and reading skills. Who wouldn't benefit from that?
