Our school is based on the foundation that nature and an organic environment can produce the best learning environment for all students. We are currently in the process of building a new school campus. The origin of our school began as A Child's Garden, LLC. I would like for our STEAM students to produce terracotta sundials to help decorate our new school campus and garden areas. There are approximately 90 students in this program, so taking on a task this big can prove to be timely and costly. We will need approximately 90 terracotta pot plates, 90 wooden dowels, clay to make the balls, paint, rulers or straight edges and sharpies. This activity is categorized as STEAM because we are using science to tell time using the sun and technology because we are building a timepiece that is powered by the sun. Students will be going through all the steps of the EDP (engineering design process) to build the dial and put all the pieces together, students will be using art by painting and decorating the dial. Students will be using math by measuring the increments and making sure they are spaced correctly, placing the correct number and space for the dial increments, and by counting by 5’s, 10’s or 30’s or by the hour. I appreciate your consideration in helping our small school’s STEAM classes with the opportunity to put their personal mark on our new school campus and fostering a sense of school pride and community service.
