This project will give students the opportunity to see firsthand how psychologists are using VR to help patients in therapeutic settings and also to conduct cutting edge research to help us gain insight into human thoughts, perceptions, and behaviors. Students will be able to enter virtual settings and experience a variety of therapeutic techniques (desensitization therapy, psychoanalysis, etc.) that are discussed in class; the direct experience will be more impactful than any class discussion or lecture and will give students direct insight into the challenges and opportunities that each technique affords. Students will also be able to participate in VR activities that psychologists are using in the lab to gain insight into human perceptions, prejudices, emotions, and behaviors. As many of these students will go on to study psychology at the university level, helping them connect class concepts with the cutting edge technology being used in the field could be invaluable. Since the pandemic, students have had first hand experience with virtual, online learning environments and have many insights and questions about the use of these technologies and the implications for our interpersonal relationships. VR in the classroom has so much potential to further these important discussions to help all of us find better solutions moving forward.
