Students in eighth grade in this area are quite tall. Many of the young men are way over six feet tall. They have to fold themselves into their desks each day, hour after hour. Many of the students have complained about how uncomfortable they are, but there is little that can be done. I have four large desks, but I have more than four tall students and these desks are not appropriate for kids at their size. Having these students sit comfortably without sacrificing the leg space of all of the other students around them is a daily chore, and they are being asked to fold themselves into a smaller space than what they should. I simply do not have the furniture that they need to help them be comfortable while learning. I have tried many different seating arrangements, These tables would be used to allow these students to stand and work at a level that would not be uncomfortable for them having to bend over while completing their tasks. These tables would also be used for students to collaborate at a larger table to ensure that their long arms and long legs are not taking up half of the table. Many of the other tables and desks were not tall enough and not large enough for these students to be able to collaborate and complete group projects. Some of these students are in these desks for two hours a day due to scheduling and they are required to be seated and reading for long periods of time in the too-small-for-them desks because there are no other options. Learning is definitely impacted by how uncomfortable they are in their current desks.
