I am the school-based occupational therapist servicing the students at Townsend Elementary School. The students work very hard throughout the school day. At regular times throughout the day, they require body and brain breaks. This is the time where a student can re-group, receive some sensory stimulation, and then re-engage with learning and the classroom. Students require additional materials other than school furniture and school supplies to engage & to remain engaged in learning. For these reasons, flexible seating has shown to remain students engaged in learning. Sensory materials have also prompted more active / busier students to remain for longer periods of time. The requests will be for specific items for flexible seating and sensory stimulation for facilitating student attention and engagement with classroom instruction.
