For many pre-teens, singing and music has become "uncool" or "embarrassing" for them to do in front of one another. Some may have become disinterested, and some may just be afraid to show enthusiasm for something that requires standing out of the crowd. It is also hard to be a beginner at an instrument or singing in a later age. This can make General Music for grades 6-8 a challenge- we want them to be engaged, and in turn, motivated to learn and create beautiful music in the process. The ukulele is a great way to bridge the gap between music theory and popular music that the students are interested in. They can learn important concepts about musical form, chord structure, and the mechanics of stringed instruments while having fun with an instrument that is not intimidating. In addition to using these with general music classes, we can also use these to enhance our choir groups and performances. With your help, we can get these middle school-aged students interested in music and learning to play!
