Some of my students have the ability to bring a laptop to school, but most of them do not. Getting access to laptops on a regular basis in the classroom can be difficult. The one thing nearly every student has is a smart phone. We need access to keyboards in order to write more frequently. By using a wireless keyboard, they can turn their phone into a mini laptop and have the ability to write their essay with ease. During high usage times for the computer carts -- MAPS testing, PARRC testing -- it is impossible to get access to the laptops. If I have keyboards in my room, I can turn their phones, iPads, or Kindles into a laptop and not interrupt their learning. I have had great success letting students use the few keyboards I already have, and I know students will be excited to use these in the near future. Phones and technology are second nature to most of my students. By capitalizing on something they all have and pairing it with a keyboard, I can help keep them working even when laptops are not readily available. I can have them in my room and ready to go at a moments notice.
