I will be teaching my students how to write for a newspaper. But before they can put their prose together, they will need to learn how to interview people, write on-the-fly, and interpret their notes to use later. These notebooks allow my writing lessons to be put into real-life scenarios. They are short, which promotes conciseness; they can be easily carried, which makes getting quotes and interviewing less cumbersome; and they are paper, so students are forced to pay more attention to their interviewee than relying on a recording. This project will last an entire school year. Along the way, these notebooks will be saved. At the end, students will reflect back on their note-taking and writing style, assessing how it has grown.
