I work very hard to provide a learning environment in my classroom that fosters a sense of community, safety, learning and comfort. I do not refer to my students as my class. We are a school family. Just as my family does at home, it is often necessary for us to have school family meetings. In these meetings, very powerful things happen. A community of writers comes together, we dissect numbers, we learn from and listen to each other, we problem solve together, discuss concerns & celebrations and respect each other's perspectives. As an experienced teacher, I know when students can most easily have eye contact and are in close proximity to one another, they listen more actively, are more engaged, have more active learning, have more empathy for one another as they share ideas, they better learn how to hold conversations and work together as a whole group. While whole group instruction can happen with students spread out across the room in their individual desks, having a common meeting area where each student has his/her own special spot definitely makes for more engaging and more effective whole group instruction. One who does not work with children may not understand the power of a space with a school family rug... It really more resembles a magic carpet because of the powerful change, bonding, growing and learning that can happen there. Thank you so much for considering my project to support!
