Guided reading is something that we do everyday in our classroom. Whether we are broken into small groups with a variety of novels, or the whole class is focused on one book, guided reading is an important part of our literacy curriculum. The book that I am requesting is called "The Hero Two Doors Down" and was written by Jackie Robinson's daughter, Sharon Robinson. She writes a true story about a little boy and his hero, Jackie Robinson, and the friendship that develops between their families. It is a great story about respecting other people's differences and learning about other cultures. With these new books, our class will have the opportunity to be immersed in a novel for guided reading that lends itself to great discussions about diversity. This book gives the chance for my students to read rich literature and have fantastic conversations about what they have read. It could also be a springboard for further dialogue on topics that are relevant to past and current events.
