Creativity sparks communication. When students are learning a new language they need to be inspired to talk about something relevant and important to them AND they need to experience the language in a wide variety of ways: hearing, seeing touching, creating. Nothing inspires children more than their own personal creation. Using the variety of manipulatives on my list, kids will be able to use the language they are learning to describe what they have created. They will use the hands-on vocabulary sets to help solidify the language and use the magnetic blocks and felt board characters to create imaginative scenes. Kids are then highly enthusiastic about using the new language to talk about their creations. When we all learned our first language, we learned it through play, through hearing our language from different people in a variety of settings. We experimented, played and created, using our language, and through trial and error (and a lot of play and creation) we mastered our language. Using the wide variety of materials on my list, students are given the opportunity to do the same with Spanish. These are invaluable tools that will help put our students on the path to becoming the bilingual, global citizens they will NEED to be!
