Given the latest natural disasters happening in the US and around the world, it is of paramount importance that students start learning about disaster preparedness and response early on. The WeDo 2.0 Core Sets include projects and activities related to different kinds of disasters, some of them being common in our state and in Dallas, like tornadoes, hurricanes and flooding. For most of those projects, students will create a model or device to minimize the impact on humans, animals and the environment after an area has been damaged by a weather-related hazard. For me, it would be truly fascinating to facilitate the learning experience of my students and help them build their confidence while providing the foundations necessary for their success. Prior to starting a career in education, I had first-hand experience with a number of technological and software applications that provide information for decision-makers. I intend to have students from diverse backgrounds collaborate to first complete the above-mentioned projects. Once they have finished the task, they will then change the parameters and come up with their own new ideas to find alternative solutions. The We-Do 2.0 Core Sets will provide students with their first experience on building and programming to make their models functional. My class will be the first in our school to work with this educational tool, and I am certain my students will have an advantage and motivation to pursue a career in one of the STEAM fields in the future.
