This summer, I took two ukulele classes through Guitars in the Classroom, an educational nonprofit program whose goal is to increase learning through music in the classroom. I learned music theory and ways to support learning through music with students. Because of the GITC teaching methods, I am able to use ukuleles while teaching California state standards.
Because of the size of our school, the district does not support a daily music program. We do not have a large budget to support extra personnel to service programs in the arts, counseling, and specialized subjects. This leaves unanswered needs for children.
I am very excited about teaching math and science with ukuleles to better support learning styles. I am also excited about offering a Ukulele Club to students during their free time. Because we are a specialty school, we have several students with unique needs. These students would greatly benefit from a musical outlet during the school day that they are not currently being offered. I believe having ukuleles would bring joy and a music culture to our school community.
In order for me to go forward with this plan, my class needs these requested five soprano ukuleles. GTCI teaches methods to instruct students using shared instruments.
