I continually strive to connect all readers with just the right book that will hook them and send them on their way to becoming a life-long reader (and learner). Unfortunately, many of my students struggle to engage in reading activities, and do not have access to books outside of the classroom. They do not value reading because they do not see themselves reflected in the books that they read. They just cannot relate to the characters. One way to quickly change my students' minds about reading is to create a library of titles that reflect their culture and our community. Students will be able to take these books home and share them with their families, and be proud of the history and culture that surrounds them. When a student makes a personal connection to what they read, and recognize that the people and places in books are just like them, they realize that books really are for them...they do belong in the company of readers. Hopefully, this will lead my students to discover the books that reflect the diverse world that we live in. But it all starts when you can take a look inside a book and see yourself reflected in the pages there.
