I am requesting a variety of alternative seats for my classroom so I can begin flexible seating. Research shows that children are able to focus and do their best work when they are comfortable. I currently have 4 wiggle cushions which kids use on the floor and on stools. I see how these cushions help children with the wigglies and help them focus. The wiggle cushions are so popular with the kids and I’ve promised my students I would get more. We are asking for 2 discs and a wedge. My students would be thrilled to have some bean bags so they could have a comfy, cozy spot to sit and work, listen or to read a book. We are especially excited about the wobble chairs on our list for when we need to sit at a table and are feeling really wiggly! Finally, the stability ball and rocker chairs will provide self-regulation and calming by allowing for subtle movement input (gentle bouncing and/or rocking) without kids getting up from their seat! I believe that providing seating alternatives for my children will help them to move, release their energy, and feel happier and more comfortable while doing their work. As a child-centered classroom where children of many developmental needs are accommodated, I emphasize cooperative student-centered learning and the children move around the classroom as they work. Young students need to be active, engage in hands-on learning, work in social, cooperative learning groups and have the time to solve problems independently and collaboratively. I am excited to give the students some freedom to find comfortable seat and flexibility in groupings.
