A school visit with Young Hoosier nominated author, Dusti Bowling, and her positive messages will have a beneficial impact on our student community. Bowling writes characters who are inspiring, like Aven in Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus. Aven is a protagonist who reminds students that they are strong and capable. That even when life seems hard and full of problematic change, that these changes are surmountable. We are also reminded from Bowling’s characters that each student comes from a different background. As we engage with Social and Emotional Learning, students see the perceptions they may have obtained about “difference” and not understanding others often creates avoidable conflict. We don’t have to know another’s secrets or diagnosis to simply be kind. It might be a cliché to say that we each have a hero inside us. That is the truth that Bowling reminds students and readers of in her writing. Students need to hear this more to build up their amazing futures, especially when life seems hard. The project of a visiting author is important to our school community because we know the more we read, the stronger learners we become, both by the practice of reading and by the message entrenched in the text. As a school community we know the funds raised for the visit might make it possible to help other schools in our district earn a visit by Mrs. Bowling. Equability raises every learner and opens new doors. We also want to help open doors for other students in our community. We are readers and leaders. Our inspiration from Dusti Bowling’s words should not just stop at us but be shared with other students.
