We are requesting stools, balance ball chairs and wobble chairs. Research shows the benefits of student choice, the freedom to move and how flexible seating heightens collaborative learning which improves social skills. Team work allows for more creativity and classroom discussions since students can easily work in pairs or small groups. This leads to increased student engagement which is linked to higher motivation and academic performance, as well as improved overall behavior. Students stay on task and accomplish more than usual because they don't want to lose the option of sitting where they want. The classroom environment should mirror what students will encounter in their future careers, and collaboration, problem solving, and meaning making are at the forefront of most job descriptions. Standard desks situated in rows do not foster open communication and collaboration. Please help me provide a comfortable, engaging learning environment for my second graders!
