In the past, my students have started their morning with simple worksheets or independent seat work. I want to up the rigor by providing students with STEM bins to replace traditional morning work. These will give students the opportunity to collaborate, think critically, and engage their brains for a day of learning. The best learning occurs for my students when they commit to a project they see as fun and meaningful. These activities will be added to STEM bins to give students the opportunity to do just that. Why give a student a worksheet that focuses on an isolated skill when a STEM activity encourages collaboration, critical thinking, planning, and engineering? I am asking for five Playground Engineering & Design STEM Sets, five IQ Puzzler Pro Games, and two Dive into Shapes Geometry Sets. These specific materials will allow my students to work as small groups to solve puzzles and test ideas. These activities vary in difficulty level and allow students to chose their daily projects based on interest. I plan to allow students to use the playground design kit to build playground structures. These kits give students directions on how to build slides, stairs, swings, etc. The materials are high interest for the students because they love anything related to recess! Another STEM bin will have the IQ Puzzler games. This small group set of games will give students the opportunity to solve puzzles and think spacially. Similar to the IQ games, the Sea Builders will have students building 3-D shapes using rods and connectors. This will integrate our geometry learning with our morning STEM work.
