As a reading teacher focused on the workshop model, it is important for the classroom to contain a variety of high interest texts at various reading levels. Students need choice, access to texts, and access to diverse authors and topics. Infusing my classroom library with new books will ignite student interest and provide access to books for reluctant readers who struggle to connect to texts. In addition, these diverse authors and topics will provide a window for students to look through as well as a mirror where they will see themselves and make sense of their own experiences. Frequently, my 9th and 10th grade students struggle to comprehend what they read or they struggle to build reading stamina. Bringing in new books, particularly the nonfiction choices in the project will help students broaden their reading range and develop critical literacy skills.
