My students need access to great non-fiction and fiction books. When I moved into my classroom five years ago, I inherited an extremely out-dated classroom library comprised of books in extremely poor condition. My students are not motivated to read by this out-dated library. Research indicates that male students are more motivated to read non-fiction texts than fiction texts. Currently, my fiction to non-fiction text ratio in my classroom library does not reflect a balance that is engaging to all students. Texts like I Am Malala, A Storm Too Soon, Night, Bomb, Guts and Glory, and Witches! offer historical, high-interest non-fiction to balance out my classroom library and engage ALL of my students. I Am Malala will be a text that I use extensively in class and read with the entire class. Other books will be accessible for students to use to complete independent studies and projects.
