Our classroom is made up of 120 6th grade ELA students. We incorporate STEAM activities into our daily learning environment. After we read and analyzed the characters and their connections to one another and to the neighborhood in the book, Seedfolks, the students focused on environmental literacy as they used recycled materials to recreate their own Seedfolks' garden. Following a rubric which incorporated Math, Science, Social Studies and ELA, each student created a garden that was a visual representation of what they imagined the garden to be like. We connected this novel to current events, with a study of immigration in the US. We will continue to include STEAM in all of our study and research.
