Our classes are 90 minutes long, and we spend a large amount of time reading and writing stories. The kids grow weary of sitting at the desks, but I do not have enough flexible seating for them to all be comfortable. We do have a rug and some stools, but there is not enough room for everyone. With more options of flexible seating, the students will be able to focus more because they won't have to take turns at the flexible seating. They will be more comfortable and feel more relaxed while doing their work. I have requested yoga balance balls because they help improve balance and can help children with sensory issues reach their full potential. Those, along with the wobble seats are perfect for students with ADHD or have an impulse to fidget because they can bounce slightly and still focus on their work. The Mayo Clinic did a study on the benefit of chairless classrooms. The findings stated that we can improve learning and reduce obesity by making children more active. Flexible seating would give us that option. They could bounce on the yoga balls, wobble on the wobble seats, and move the stools to wherever they want to work in the room. I want them to be comfortable and confident while they're becoming great readers and writers.
