With all of the emotional struggles that some children endure, it is hard to imagine how difficult it is for them to function in an elementary classroom where the basic academic skills are so crucial. Anxiety and stress can interfere with their ability to interact appropriately with peers and to focus their attention on learning. Sensory materials can provide students with the tools they need to overcome stress and anxiety. Noise-reduction headphones will help students block out extraneous noise, while the bouncy-bands and gel-seats will provide an opportunity to wiggle a bit without having to get up and disturb others. Certain students also need an alternative method to thumb-sucking and chewing on classroom materials. The availability of these sensory tools will help the students meet their emotional needs and increase their ability for academic success.
