“Black children need to see their lives reflected in the books they read. If they don’t, they won’t feel welcome in the world of literature. The lives of African-Americans are rich and diverse, and the books our children read should reflect that.” — Valerie Wilson Wesley Having literature students are reflected in, gives them motivation to read, which in turn increases their literacy. These pieces I selected are intended for my students to see themselves in and want to keep reading. They will be able to go home, and in turn, share with family members to continue informal book talks. Although my entire class is not reflected in this demographic, when students read diverse literature they are enlightened by a world they do not live in, which in turn creates empathy. As this empathy is being formed, encouragement and empowerment are also rising up among my readers who connect with the pieces on a personal level. These books will be added to my classroom library, presented in read-alouds, and used in novel studies.
