Playing with magnets is a useful science activity for preschool age children because it promotes critical thinking, exploration of materials, and predictions. It also helps foster growth of fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. By exploring magnets and having children learn to make predictions, we are setting the ground work for skills they will use later when reading a story and answering questions about that story. Critical thinking is also a key part of exploring magnets--talking to the children about why the magnets "stick" to each other and encouraging them to explore the magnets and manipulate them in many different ways. Also while examining the magnets and testing their attraction to each other, the children are talking and gaining language and social skills while doing science.
