I teach Beginning and Intermediate/Advanced Band. The Band program offers all students the opportunity to develop their playing skills on an instrument as well as gain performing experience in an ensemble setting. If students want to continue on, they can enroll in Intermediate/Advanced Band as well as receive free private lessons. New students are continually enrolling in band. I help students develop self-help strategies that lead them to be more independent in their learning. This greatly helps them and will continue well into their future pursuit of obtaining a college education. They must be able to develop strategies on their own as well as be resourceful. The students in my class range from freshmen to seniors. Over 50 percent of the students come from low-income households. Instead of charging students with an instrument fee, the school covers all costs associated with the instrument.
