My students attend a public school and range from mild to moderate in their cognitive abilities. They love to cook and to share their creations with others. They have a wide range in their social skills as well and need many opportunities to continue to improve their interpersonal relation skills. We currently use crock pots and electric skillets to prepare luncheons for the teachers in our school every month. The students love to plan, shop, prepare, and serve these meals. The students love doing as much of the meal by themselves as they can and take great pride in their end products. We work on kitchen skills repetitively to help them continue to progress. Many of my students will be able to live independently but lack confidence in their abilities to plan a meal, buy the groceries, and prepare the food. Our teacher's luncheons offer the opportunity to work on all these skills as well as their communication. They need to interact during planning, shopping and serving the dinner.
