My students need access to a high quality, sturdy pencil sharpener that will last the entire school year as well as a vacuum cleaner to keep our room clean and tidy. The X-Acto sharpener is a high volume commercial sharpener which is definitely needed for the amount of pencils we sharpen! I have purchased 3 electric sharpeners in the last year and they all eventually broke. In our classroom, we have a basket for sharp pencils and another one for dull pencils. Students take turns being the pencil sharpener. They sharpen all the pencils at once just before school or during transitions. That way, when students are working and they need a new pencil, we have a stash of sharp pencils ready to go. This project will eliminate interruptions to instruction and student work as well as allow our students to be an integral part of cleaning their classroom. Due to budget cuts, our classrooms only get vacuumed every other day. Since students eat breakfast and snack in the classroom, our room really needs cleaning daily. Students can take turns helping to vacuum our class at the end of each day. The can feel proud and capable that they are helping out while learning an important life skill at the same time. With a class vacuum cleaner, students can all work together to have a clean, safe environment to learn. They can take pride in knowing that they are helping to keep our room clean.
