Students have been using tools to manipulate math concepts since ancient times with the invention of the abacus. Not much has changed since. By providing my students with tools to aide in learning, they are more likely to connect to concepts in meaningful ways. Manipulatives allow the student to move from the concrete to the abstract stage of learning with a greater chance of successful understanding. By enriching the "math toolbox" in our classroom, my students will also have that chance of being more successful in their math. I will utilize the storage shelving by organizing our class tools in a way that students can independently locate and use the tools they need to solve problems in math. By encouraging this independence in my classroom, it is my hope that students will gain confidence in themselves knowing they have the TOOLS to be successful!
